La correspondencia entre Ángel Morales, el exiliado antitrujillista y exministro en Washington durante el gobierno de Horacio Vázquez, y Sumner Welles, quien dirigió la política latinoamericana del Departamento de Estado entre 1933 y 1943, es la más importante y voluminosa del exilio antitrujillista, sobre todo entre 1930 y 1943. Este libro constituye una notable contribución a la historia del exilio antitrujillista. Por razones comprensibles, la oposición clandestina al régimen dejó un volumen exiguo de documentos y son pocos los archivos privados del mismo exilio a los cuales se ha tenido acceso. Las cartas entre Morales y Welles tienen una importancia similar a los despachos de los embajadores norteamericanos desde Santo Domingo. Morales fue la figura paradigmática de la oposición al régimen de Trujillo hasta aproximadamente 1945, ya que había quedado como una suerte de delfín de derrocado presidente Horacio Vázquez. |
